This one is at the front of the house. The flat roof runs along the front of the house, sheltering the front door and the open porch, then carrying on over the bay window. Because it is the first thing anyone sees when they arrive, the finish matters as much as the waterproofing.
We stripped the old covering off and re-covered the canopy in EPDM rubber roofing, finished with black edge trims along the front above the black gutter.
Under the old covering
With the old surface scraped off, the canopy turned out to be built on a deck of sawn timber planks rather than modern sheet boards. The photo shows the team clearing the last of the old material with shovels and brushes, so the new membrane would go onto a clean surface.
Canopies like this are narrow, so there is very little room for error at the edges. Almost every part of the roof is close to an edge, a wall or the gutter.
The awkward corners
At one end the canopy meets a brick pier and the rendered wall of the house, right beside a translucent sheet roof alongside. The close-up shows the rubber dressed up the render and the brick, with a separate strip laid along the join with the neighbouring roof.
A black gutter runs along the front with its outlet at the corner, and the edge trims are fixed along the fascia line so the canopy has a clean, straight edge when viewed from the drive.

Finished for the winter
This job was done in December, and the photos were taken on a wet day, with rain beading on the new rubber and Christmas lights still hanging from the canopy edge. The finished view from the drive shows a crisp black fascia line from the porch pillar across to the bay.

Can EPDM be used on a porch or bay canopy?
Yes. EPDM suits small and narrow flat roofs as well as large ones, and the black trims give a tidy edge that looks right at the front of a house.
What if my canopy has old plank decking?
Plank decks were common on older canopies. Once the old covering is off we look at the planks: sound ones can be kept, and any soft or damaged ones are dealt with before the membrane goes down.
Can rubber roofing be done in winter?
It can, within limits. The adhesives need a dry surface, so we work around the weather and make sure the deck is dry before bonding.
